This page is mainly for those absolute first-time swimmers! Here, I will cover the basic strokes and how they work. If you already know what each stroke is, this page isn't for you!
Okay, so for those who really don't know what the strokes are, there are 4: Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke, and Freestyle. You can also swim the Individual Medley (IM) in meets which consists of all the strokes in the above order. I'll also go through the strokes below in that order:
Butterfly
Butterfly is considered by many as the hardest stroke. I wouldn't suggest trying it as a beginner, as you may develop bad habits early that are hard to work out of. Butterfly is essentially this: You pull your arms simultaneously in a counter-clockwise direction as you kick your feet together in a rhythmic pattern.
Backstroke
Backstroke is done just how it sounds: On your back. You float on your back while pulling your arms beside your body, and flutter kicking. It's probably better for more people to become more adapted to front swimming before trying backstroke.

Breaststroke
Breaststroke is a very hard stroke to get correct. Many people say "Either you're born with it, or you're bad at it." which (in my opinion) holds some truth. You start out with your hands in a streamline then pulling them back at the same time, a little further back than your shoulders. While you do this, you kick your legs in a scissor motion. If you need more help with your breaststroke, you can visit: http://www.swimming.org/swimfit/competitive-breaststroke/ where they can help you improve technique.
Freestyle
Today, freestyle is probably the simplest and most popular stroke. It's also considered to be the fastest, although it may depend on the person. It's basically this: You flutter kick while rotating your body according to your hands and hands, which move in a counter-clockwise motion.
